使い続けるうち、ふきんの具体性と象徴性は薄れていく。山吹色は消え去り、残るのは薄汚い茶色だけだ。使い古されたふきんには、うっすらと、しかし、明らかに抜染された使用者の手形が残っている。これはもはや何を主張したかったのか判然とせず、ただ輪郭だけが幽霊のように浮いている。古びた手形は意味を失ってしまったのに、なぜか存在だけは居座り続ける。そこには、制作者の意図をはみ出して、どこか他力めいた佇まいが漂う。

With continued use, the dishcloth’s concreteness and symbolism diminish. The bright yellow disappears, leaving only a soiled brown. Faintly, yet unmistakably, the previously discharged handprint of the user remains, now ghostly and ambiguous. Its original meaning is lost, yet the trace persists, seemingly independent of intention, with an almost other-powered presence.
