「日用品の他力道」

《ふきんの他力道》は、もとは鮮やかな山吹色だった。
玉ねぎの皮から抽出した染料は、ミョウバンで媒染すると黄色く発色する。本来なら台所で即座に生ゴミとして捨てられるはずの玉ねぎの皮から抽出された染料で、いったん鮮やかな山吹色に染め上げられたふきんには、かつて制作者の手形がくっきりと染め抜かれていた。

使い続けるうち、ふきんの具体性と象徴性は薄れていく。山吹色は消え去り、残るのは薄汚い茶色だけだ。使い古されたふきんには、うっすらと、しかし、明らかに抜染された使用者（＝制作者）の手形が残っている。これはもはや何を主張したかったのか判然とせず、ただ輪郭だけが幽霊のように浮いている。古びた手形は意味を失ってしまったのに、なぜか存在だけは居座り続ける。そこには、制作者の意図をはみ出して、どこか他力めいた佇まいが漂う。

Tariki-dō of Everyday Life:

"Tariki-dō of a Dishcloth" was originally dyed a vivid yamabuki yellow.
The dye, extracted from onion skins and mordanted with alum, produces a bright yellow hue. On the dishcloth dyed with this natural pigment, the maker’s handprint was once clearly visible.

With continued use, the dishcloth’s concreteness and symbolism diminish. The bright yellow disappears, leaving only a soiled brown. Faintly, yet unmistakably, the previously discharged handprint of the user (the maker) remains, now ghostly and ambiguous. Its original meaning is lost, yet the trace persists, seemingly independent of intention, with an almost other-powered presence.
